On Monday, January 13, HPS member Barbara Hitt and her husband Gary will be giving a presentation about their trek to see Mountain Gorillas. They have visited over 60 foreign countries in their quest to see and photograph birds and wildlife. The Mountain Gorillas are among the rarest animal species with only about a thousand left in the world, and none in captivity. Their only habitat is in the high volcanic mountains of Uganda and Rwanda. Access to the gorilla population is highly controlled with a small number of people allowed to make the trek to see them daily. The trek involves a daunting climb through dense vegetation and up steep terrain with the hopes of seeing the gorillas who are constantly on the move. In addition to the gorillas, Barbara will also show other African wildlife that they encountered, as well as some of the local people including a visit to a school and to a pygmy tribe.
